Making Art Every Week in 2021

Like last year, I set a goal for myself to create and share artwork online every week of 2021. Again, it wasn’t easy, but I made it, had some fun and learned a whole lot. In 2020 I didn’t set a theme for myself so I wanted a bit more structure this year, and I did that with the following rules:

  • Digital Art Only. I followed this rule strictly and I’m glad I did. I learned a lot about vector artwork and how to use Affinity Designer on my iPad effectively.

  • Limit of 2.5 hours per week. I totally failed at sticking to this, but I’m not mad about it. I just didn’t keep track. I probably spent a little less than 2.5 hours on some weeks and far, far more on others.

  • Share on Twitter every Sunday. I stuck to this again, and I’m glad I did—one of the ways I motivate myself to do this every week is by sharing it on social media.

Going into 2022, I’m changing it up with a new theme and two simple rules:

  • Physical Objects Only. The final work must be three dimensional. No digital work, and no drawings or paintings.

  • Share on Twitter every Sunday. Same as the last two years.

I suspect 2022 is going to be the toughest yet, since physical objects take more time for me to create, and I can’t work on them from anywhere. For that reason, I’m also going to allow myself to work ahead when necessary. In 2021 I did this a few times, to account for life events that would prevent me from working on art for 1+ weeks at a time, such as the birth of my first child. In 2022 I’ll continue working ahead when I want to, so although I’ll post work every week, that doesn’t necessarily mean I finished it that week. I can understand how some would say this doesn’t count as “creating art every week”, but that’s fine: it’s what works for me and I consider sharing new work every week an accomplishment.
